Hi, my name is Ash, and I am honoured to have been offered the role as Team Leader of the Waihi Lifecare Birthing Centre. I have lived in the Waihi/Waihi Beach area most of my life. My partner and I have three children who are currently at Waihi Beach school and I also have a small dance school where I teach ballet and soon jazz.

I had my own children at the Birthing Centre and the care we received made a huge difference in helping us in the first few days of our journey. Taking on this role, my goal is to continue to improve the great care and support our staff give to families, along with offering an increasing range of services available to new mums.

Renovations to date and for the future

Our historical centre needed some much needed love, so 2020 has been a big year. With fresh paint and beautiful new furniture, I can say we are all very proud of what we have achieved. Mothers and whanau who have stayed since the renovations seem to really love the warm homelike space we have created.

Our postnatal rooms are now fresh and modern and we have just finished the facelift of our midwifes’ clinical office. Next on the list will be our entrance hall and whanau room.

A special thankyou also goes to the Lions club who helped us purchase new life saving equipment for our Birthing room.

Top 3 reasons mums should consider birthing or transferring back from public hospital post birth, to the Birthing Centre

Women’s bodies are designed to give birth, and most can do it without medical intervention. We encourage women to use our large delivery room and birth pool. It is a peaceful home away from home and perfect for your natural birth. For mothers who either require or prefer a hospital delivery, there is also the option to transfer back to our centre to enjoy this special time.

Most women stay with us 2 – 4 nights depending on their individual needs, that may include rest, breastfeeding support, or bonding with your baby. Your partner or support person is encouraged to stay with you during this whole period.

With our world changing from the covid-19 pandemic we are really seeing that impact on expecting families. It is so nice to be able to support families and give them a safe and quiet place.

Moving forward

Hopefully, all our renovations will be completed over the next 12 months. We are working on providing antenatal and other supportive groups for expecting families. I am excited to see what 2021 will bring for our centre and look forward to meeting and helping familie
